Lake Erie is filling with algae again. In 2011 an algae bloom covered one fifth of Lake Erie’s surface, eclipsing by almost three times the next largest bloom on record. Last summer, Toledo, Ohio declared a state of emergency, warning 400,000 residents to avoid drinking tap water due to the presence of high levels of algal toxins in the water supply. Similarly, in Canadian waters, the beaches of Pelee Island were closed and residents were warned not to use lake water or drink from wells in the area for almost a week.
To combat this growing threat, the US and Canada recently released their draft targets for nutrient reductions in Lake Erie. The deadline for comments on the targets is August 31st.
